LaGuardia AirTrain project suspended

NEW YORK – The LaGuardia Airport AirTrain project is on hiatus as the port authority examines potential alternative transit options, the agency said Tuesday evening.

On October 4, Governor Kathy Hochul asked the agency to look into alternatives.

“The agency will work in close consultation with independent experts and stakeholders, and complete its work as quickly as possible, in line with the need for a thorough and rigorous review,” the port authority said in a statement.

The controversial project, championed by former Governor Andrew Cuomo, promised a 30-minute ride from LaGuardia to Midtown Manhattan. It would connect the airport to train 7 and Long Island Rail Road near Citi Field by an elevated rail line over three kilometers.

But residents of East Elmhurst say it doesn’t make sense for travelers to head east past the airport, to turn around at Citi Field and head back west towards LaGuardia.

State Senator Jessica Ramos, who represents the region and has publicly opposed the project, welcomed the Port Authority’s news in a statement.

“This project was absurd from the start and failed to significantly solve the problems it purported to solve,” Ramos said. “I am confident that the Port Authority’s review will reveal what we already knew: This was a $ 2.1 billion vanity project, and that money can be better spent on building transportation in 21st century common that Queens can be proud of. “

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) gave the green light to the AirTrain plan in July.

Last month, homeowners and environmental activists sued the federal government and the Port Authority over the plan.
