Mehta reviews the construction of vital road projects in JK

SRINAGAR, 02 JUNE (KNS): Chief Secretary Dr. Arun Kumar Mehta today reviewed the status of the various road projects including the national highways being developed here in UT.

The meeting was attended by Principal Secretary, PWD; divisional commissioners; Commissioner Secretary, Forest; Commissioner Revenue Secretary; Secretary, PD&MD; deputy commissioners; MD, KPDCL; PWD Chief Engineers, Jal Shakti, PDD; Representatives of BRO, NHIDCL and other officers from relevant departments.

The Chief Secretary (CS) urged the executing agencies to make it a goal to complete all these projects within the time frame. He asked them that the erection of guardrails, traffic signs, parapets on the national roads for the safety of travelers be carried out before the 15th of this month. He also advised the district administration to examine the availability of public services such as restaurants, toilets, etc. on national highways for pleasant driving on them.

Dr. Mehta inquired about the status of five tunnels (T1-T5) being constructed on the Srinagar-Jammu national highway which will drastically reduce the travel time between these towns in addition to making the highway more reliable. He asked them to speed up work on these tunnels so that all are dedicated to the public in a timely manner.

He instructed them to move additional men and machinery for the maintenance of this road until the work was completed. He also ordered to minimize waiting time at toll booths by opening all lanes for vehicles and using updated RFID readers there. He made it clear to all DCs that there should be the least amount of traffic disruption on the Srinagar-Jammu trunk road, with emphasis on clearing the road within an hour or two.

Regarding the availability of material for the construction of new roads, the Chief Secretary requested the departments concerned to provide online authorizations for the extraction of minerals in addition to exploring the possibility of allowing them to transport them beyond the daylight hours.

The SC also ordered the departments of PDD and Jal Shakti to immediately relocate their utilities to wherever necessary so that construction and the provision of services to the general public are not affected. He also reiterated that the land acquisition process must be completed at the earliest. He ordered both the district and divisional administration to resolve all issues at their level and ensure that the lands are transferred to the departments without further delay.

The Chief Secretary reviewed the status of roads like Jammu, Srinagar Semi-Circular Road Projects, Delhi-Amritsar-Katra Highway, Shopian-Qazigund Bypass, Kathua-Basholi-BaniRoad, Srinagar Road -Sonamarg, Z-Morh Tunnel Project, Chenani-Sudhmahadev Road, Akhnoor-Poonch Road, Srinagar-Baramulla-Uri Road and many other internal city roads in Jammu and Srinagar cities.

The meeting deliberated on issues relating to these road projects and their relevant resolutions. He also discussed the expected timelines for each of them. These road projects were said to be very important to the people of UT and work should be expedited to complete them as soon as possible for the general good of the public as discussed at the meeting.
