Food Service Direct, the online source for access to quality bulk foods and supplies, recently conducted a national study that found Montana to be the third worst state in the United States to be a laborer. restoration.
KGVO News spoke with Brand Services Director Amrisa Naranjan, who detailed some of the reasons Montana fared so poorly in her study.
“One of the things that came back included hourly earnings which was a pretty lower rank than average in Montana if you’re in the restaurant business,” Naranjan said. “In addition, childcare support was ranked significantly lower than the national average, as well as satisfaction with tips. Put all three together and these are basically the factors that probably lowered the overall score the most.
Naranjan explained the extremely low score when it comes to tips for food service workers.
“Tipping satisfaction, for example, doesn’t mean people don’t want to be generous,” she said. “Sometimes it comes down to the median income of the average person in the state. Is it possible to be as generous as you wish? So I think it’s important to make sure we think about that when we think about data, because it’s not that people aren’t necessarily happy to be generous in Montana to food service workers . It could just come down to whether it’s doable for everyone based on salaries in the state.
Naranjan compared food service workers to health care workers on possible risks of COVID infection due to close personal contact with the public.
“That’s the question,” she said. “Isn’t the risk or the value of that equivalent to what the worker or the person behind the counter and what they receive is worth it?” And in the case of foodservice that included high exposure and low pay. So you can imagine how that particular industry must have felt as well, because they also interact with so many different people all day, taking a lot of risks.
Naranjan said that ultimately the pandemic will force the best players in the restaurant industry to rise to the top.
“If there’s one group or industry that has a will and finds a way, it’s usually the restaurant industry,” she said. “We’ve seen some really impressive adaptive approaches for business during the pandemic, and I think this natural shift is going to allow us to see who the business superstars are when it comes to food. So there may be fewer (food service businesses) down the road, but I would bet that even if there are fewer, they will be very good quality and very well run.
The study indicates that the five best states to work in hospitality are North Carolina, New Jersey, Kentucky, California and South Carolina, while the five worst states are New Mexico, Rhode Island, MontanaWest Virginia and Connecticut.
