SberIndex and OneTwoTrip: Russians manage to leave places where they were not allowed

Although the Russian tourism industry has yet to recover from the restrictions linked to the pandemic, Russians spent 34.2% more on travel during the summer of 2021. According to a study by SberIndex and OneTwoTrip, the Russians spent 1.46 billion rubles on domestic tourism and 2.3 billion dollars on outbound tourism. While ignoring Egypt, the Russians left the Maldives and Seychelles a lot, and even managed to leave Italy and Germany, which were formally closed to travelers. Domestic tourism saw little change in the choice of destinations, and demand was more stable: Moscow, St. Petersburg and Sochi emerged in the top three. The main resort in southern Russia saw a noticeable drop in demand in the second half of summer, which was most likely associated with tighter COVID-19 restrictions.

Russians’ tourism spending increased 34.2% in the summer of 2021 compared to 2020, with both the domestic segment and the outbound segment on the rise.

In June and August, $ 2.3 billion was spent abroad, almost 70% more year-on-year.

However, the industry is still depressed about the pre-pandemic. Outbound tourism spending in the summer of 2021 was only 17.4% of the level observed in 2019 (in dollars).

Even though Egypt reopened its airports, it failed to make it into the Top 10 countries in terms of spending.

Still, the Russians managed to leave Italy and Germany, which were closed to travelers.

Domestic tourism in Russia generated expenditure of 1.46 billion rubles, and the situation here is much better.

Tourism spending in Russia grew 31.5% year-on-year, 8pp above the organic growth rate.

The outcome could have been even better, but tighter COVID-19 restrictions have affected domestic travel. Tourism spending was 11% below trend level in July and August.

The preferences of Russians in the cities on their vacations in the interior have hardly changed. Moscow remained an undisputed leader with 25% of the total number of bookings, St. Petersburg ranked second (11.5%) and was visited more often than last year, while Sochi ranked third ( 7.8% of all airline tickets purchased).
