NEW YORK CITY (WPIX) – A TSA officer in New York recently discovered a new meaning in the phrase “beauty is pain”.
TSA officials said Thursday that a traveler at LaGuardia Airport was recently arrested at a security checkpoint after an officer found a tube of lipstick that was not at all at all. lipstick, but a knife.
“Instead of the lipstick in the tube, a twist of the handle reveals a razor-sharp blade,” TSA spokesperson Lisa Farbstein said on Twitter.
“If it was lipstick, what would the color be, blood red?” She joked.
Farbstein told Nexstar that the traveler ultimately turned the item over to the TSA after being given the choice to check it out, hand it over to a traveling companion, or return it to their vehicle.
Some sharp objects, such as knives or cutters, are prohibited in carry-on baggage, according to the TSA. This traveler’s lipstick-style knife, Farbstein said, is one such prohibited item, but it is not illegal to own or bring checked baggage.
Another recent traveler was not so lucky, having been arrested in June for attempting to smuggle a gun disguised as a belt buckle through a checkpoint at Newark Liberty Airport in New Jersey. The man, who had the item in his carry-on, told TSA agents that he forgot the gun was in his bag. The TSA’s federal director of security for New Jersey later called the man’s actions “inexcusable.”
