Fabienne Anthamatten – Large and small building blocks for a sustainable future

Since 2010, Fabienne Anthamatten has been the manager of Hotel Bella Vista Zermatt and is the third generation to run the hotel.

Today the hotel has 21 rooms and a wellness area – a modest family business with stunning views of the Matterhorn.

Fabienne has been committed from the start to sustainable action in the daily life of the hotel. The first stone had already been laid by his parents.



Sorting out trash or, better yet, avoiding it altogether and only taking in the amount of food she could actually eat, are the memories that shaped her childhood.

Fabienne and her two sisters helped collect fruit to make jam – everything was recycled, whether from an animal or a plant. For Fabienne, what lasts has value. Added to this is his love of nature and the region.

This can also be seen in the hotel industry: at the Bella Vista hotel electricity is generated from hydroelectric power, regional products are used, at breakfast the eggs come from the hotel’s own chickens and unnecessary packaging and plastic bottles are now totally avoided.

With her place on the board of directors of the Zermatt Hoteliers Association, Fabienne also engages in sustainable action, sometimes even against long-established traditions. With her many ideas, large and small, she lays the foundations for a sustainable future. In the region, in his company and in his family.

In her private life, the nature-loving hotel manager spends a lot of time in the mountains. This includes an annual trip to the Gorner Glacier to measure how far it has retreated.

These moments when climate change is so clearly visible encourage him to act responsibly with resources and to prioritize the essentials.

Elena Scalambrin – With Enthusiasm for Family History

Elena Scalambrin, Head of Relais du Maro in Italy, with his mother, has made their family estate a real gem. For many generations, Elena and her family have lived in the small Ligurian village of Borgomaro, in the hinterland of Imperia.

The family worked as shoemakers, innkeepers or butchers and have always been part of the village community.

Elena and “La Mamma” have lived many beautiful moments of their lives within the walls of these residences and can tell secrets and anecdotes about every room and corner.

When the family properties were in dire need of renovation, Elena decided to transform them into a hotel spread over several buildings – an Albergo Diffuso. In 2012, Relais del Maro was born and has been delighting its guests ever since with its exciting blend of tradition and modernity.

The well-being of guests is the top priority here. “We always have the best possible result and respect for the environment in mind,” says Elena. And this is very clear in all the many small details. The Relais del Maro is committed to selecting organic products from Liguria and lower Piedmont.

The water for the irrigation and the swimming pool comes from an artesian well and even the cleaning products used are 95% ecological and biodegradable.

However, the wonderful cuisine of “La Mamma”, the many stories of the village and the warmth of the hostesses are what the guests of Relais del Maro remember most.

Marion Muller – Entrepreneur and visionary

During her studies in tourism, Marion Müller already recognized the importance of sustainability for the travel industry.

She was involved in various subsequent development projects and decided to work in the field of low impact sustainable tourism herself.

With the acquisition of a property in need of renovation and modernization in Timmendorfer Strand, Marion Muller and her husband Lambertus were able to realize their own vision of a green hotel focusing on modern lifestyle, sustainability and naturalness. So the Lifestylehotel SAND was born. Gradually, the green vision became reality.

SAND now uses geothermal energy and plans to install a photovoltaic system in the future. Thirty-four new rooms and a completely new interior design with mostly natural materials make SAND an eco-friendly yet unique retreat with a certain “art of living”. Then, as now, socially responsible corporate structures played just as important a role in partner selection as environmentally friendly production.

A sense of composure and an awareness of being entrepreneurs rather than underachievers has always helped Marion Muller when things haven’t gone so well, and that certainly includes the pandemic.

As an independent entrepreneur and ‘doer’, she struggled to see the crisis as an opportunity and reconsidered and redesigned hotel processes.

This led to new ideas, such as integrating employee suggestions through team workshops and encouraging the kitchen team to become more aware, to do even more themselves, as well as to be proactive about reducing waste. food and waste. In addition, the program also includes its own herb garden.

For some time now, another inspiring woman has been alongside Marion Muller. Yvonne Bork has been handling operational affairs as manager for about a year now, leaving the hotel manager more time for public relations, pushing the green hotel concept and for privacy.

In her private life, Marion Muller is also committed to people, the environment and animals, for example through the association Whale and Dolphin Conservation (WDC), which campaigns for endangered porpoises.

Whether new concepts for the hotel or private business, Marion Muller is never short of ideas.

Tanja Duračković – Pioneer passionate about nature

Tanja Duračković is the CEO and founder of Adriatic Pearls, a company that owns the Eco-Apartments Hotel The Dreamers’ Club and the Natural Design Apartments Sunshine with swimming pool in Lumbarda on the island of Korcula.

Tanja loves nature. The fresh air, the sea, the food produced in an ecological way in the region, the elegant design of the wooden and stone houses and a relaxed way of life – for her, this is luxury.

Over a decade ago, the Croatian holiday home market was flooded with unattractive rental homes marketed by unreliable operators.

Tanja identified a niche in the market for authentic and charming holiday homes with quality services – and that was the birth of Adriatic Pearls. A company offering custom, beautifully designed (and later eco-friendly) summer homes right on the beach.

Soon after, she purchased her first building, the Natural Design Apartments. A few years later, she became allergic to anything plastic. Another motivator to build an all-green, all-natural, toxic-free home. It was something she could take in even more out of love for the Adriatic coast. A place that is not only eco-friendly, but a space to relax and rejuvenate at the same time.

She bought an old, derelict house above Lumbarda Marina, completely renovated it, and reopened it as an eco-apartment called The Dreamers’ Club. A quite sustainable retreat has emerged. Somewhere we can dream, relax or simply make memories.

With her commitment, Tanja Duračković aims to encourage others by following her initiative and further developing the market for green, healthy and ecological holiday homes.

The duo of the Okelmann sisters

There are two women running the hotel by Okelmann. Maren and Kristin Okelmann run the traditional hotel, which is now in its fifth generation of family management.

Both sisters are experts in their field and learned their craft at other hotels before returning home to their parents’ beloved business.

For generations, people and land have been at the center of everything the Okelmann family does. “Our passion is to bring people and nature together. Not just in the home and kitchen. This statement also sums up their philosophy well.

Maren is a massage therapist and yoga teacher and imparts her knowledge to clients in the form of regular classes and retreats. A completely new yoga room is now also part of the Okelmann’s offer.

The sisters have taken a lot of time for new ideas and visions to make Okelmann a real wellness retreat and a place full of warmth and welcome. A completely sustainable concept included!

For example, Okelmann’s sources almost exclusively from regional suppliers and farmers, preferably in organic quality. Pastry and cooking are done according to traditional family recipes and with a lot of love for the profession.

A sustainable energy supply, fairly produced towels and bed linen as well as high-quality natural cosmetics in the rooms are also part of the sustainability initiatives. But Maren and Kristin don’t want to rest on the status quo. There will certainly be more innovative things to report from Okelmann soon.

Mother and daughter – A successful management team

Dalia and her daughter Dovilé Šipelienė opened the 4-star hotel ROMANTIC Boutique Hotel & Spa in 2002. Both want to show that nature-oriented and environmentally friendly ideas and the corresponding sustainable lifestyle are realistic and achievable for everyone.

They faced many challenges before the launch: The ROMANTIC Boutique Hotel & Spa is located in a renovated old mill in the center of the Lithuanian town of Panevėžys.

The building is on the list of historical and cultural monuments of the Republic of Lithuania, which meant many restrictions and conditions during the renovation.

Both have poured their heart and soul into the transformation and the result is an authentic design that embodies the essence of the industrial past combined with the elegance of the present.

Dalia and Dovilé have also incorporated their connection to the region and history into the beautiful ETNO SPA, where traditional Baltic healing methods are used.

The harmonious and cozy decor of the hotel perfectly reflects the personal touch of the management duo.
